Fight Skin Aging with Exfoliation

Another summer is behind us, and those of us who took advantage of the beautiful weather by going to the beach or enjoying other outdoor activities have some sun damage to make up for. Even those of us with skin that does well in the sun want to treat our skin well so it looks good for the holidays.

One easy and highly effective way to counteract skin aging is exfoliation.

Exfoliation is the removal of the dead cells from our outermost layer of skin, which brings the fresher and younger cells to the surface. The process also removes oil and dirt from your pores (helping to prevent acne), evens out your skin tone, and has the anti-aging effect of stimulating collagen growth.

There are two basic types of exfoliation:

  • Physical exfoliation which makes use of mechanical means to gently abrade your skin, sloughing away the dead cells and bringing the fresher layer of skin to the surface. Microdermabrasion is a good example of physical exfoliation.
  • Chemical exfoliation is, as the name implies, done by the application of chemicals to your skin. The Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery offers a wide variety of chemical peels, and our medical aesthetician can recommend specific ones to suit your needs and skin type.

The natural process by which we shed our skin cells, called desquamation, slows down as we age. This is a contributing factor to fine lines and wrinkles, as the process of desquamation is what drives the growth of fresh layers of skin. By taking advantage of professional exfoliation techniques, you accelerate and stimulate this process.
