Breast Asymmetry

Breast asymmetry occurs when there is a difference in the size, shape, position, or volume of your breasts. Breast asymmetry is one of the most common breast concerns that our surgeons address, and over half of all women have asymmetrical breasts. Our world-class plastic surgeons bring decades of combined experience in aesthetic procedures and have helped thousands of patients achieve their individual breast goals.

What is Breast Asymmetry?

Asymmetrical breasts typically occur naturally as the breasts develop during puberty. Aside from self-esteem issues, severe breast asymmetry may cause frustration with ill-fitting bras and other clothing. Hormonal changes, puberty, breastfeeding, breast trauma, genetics, weight gain, and weight loss can all contribute to asymmetrical breasts. Underlying medical conditions like tuberous breasts can also cause asymmetry.

Tuberous breasts, also known as tubular breasts, are the result of a congenital abnormality. During puberty, the breast tissue develops irregularly, resulting in certain visible differences. These include enlarged and puffy areolas, an unusually wide space between the breasts, minimal breast tissue, and sagging. Many patients seek surgery to correct asymmetrical breasts without realizing that they actually have one tubular breast.

During your initial consultation at Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery, your board-certified surgeon will examine your breasts and discuss your breast goals. Depending on the severity of your breast asymmetry and your desired surgical outcome, they will recommend the best procedure for you.

Additionally, our expert team can discuss your financing options during your consultation to help you budget for your breast surgery and overcome any financial obstacles. We will work with you to make the application process simple and easy, so you can undergo the procedure you desire without financial stress.

Learn More About Breast Asymmetry

Breast asymmetry correction is performed with local or general anesthesia, depending on the needs of your procedure and your personal preferences. Our experienced surgeons can perform one or a combination of the following procedures to correct asymmetrical breasts and achieve optimal results:

Breast Reduction

breast reduction surgery for asymmetrical breasts may involve reducing the size of your larger breast to match the other. Alternatively, both breasts may be reduced to the same size. During this procedure, your surgeon may remove excess fat, skin, and glandular tissue to alter the size and shape of one or both breasts.

Breast Augmentation

If you wish to increase the size of your smaller breast to be equivalent to the size of your other breast, your surgeon may perform a breast augmentation with implants or fat transfer. During a breast implant procedure, your physician will place an implant that closely mimics your other breast. You may also choose two different-sized implants to make both breasts larger. During your consultation, we will help you determine which breast implants are best for you.

During a fat transfer, your surgeon uses liposuction to extract unwanted fat from selected areas of your body. Popular areas to remove fat from include the hips, abdomen, and thighs. Your surgeon will purify your fat cells and then inject them into your smaller breast to increase its volume.

Breast asymmetry can also result from problems with the shape of the chest wall. Pectus carinatum, or “pigeon chest,” is when the ribs or breastbone protrude more than normal. If the sternum is indented or caved in, it’s known as pectus excavatum. These chest wall deformities may need to be surgically corrected if they cause physical problems. A silicone implant, similar to a breast implant, may benefit patients unhappy with the appearance of pectus excavatum.

Breast Lift

You may pair your breast reduction or breast augmentation procedure with a breast lift to achieve the best results. A breast lift improves the position of a drooping breast for a uniform location, balance, and shape. During a breast lift, your surgeon removes excess skin and tightens breast tissue to achieve firmer, youthful-looking breasts.

If you have asymmetrical areolas or inverted nipples, nipple correction can be included as a part of any breast surgery.

Your recovery experience will depend on the type of breast procedure performed. Most breast procedures take approximately four to six weeks to recover from. However, your recovery time may vary depending on the extent of your procedure(s) and your personal healing process. During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss the expectations for your recovery timeline.

You may experience some swelling, bruising, tightness, and general discomfort after breast surgery, which is usually manageable with pain relievers. Wearing a compression bra can help with your swelling and accelerate your healing.

You should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for about six weeks and only resume these activities once your surgeon has cleared you. Make sure to follow their post-op instructions and attend your follow-up appointments to ensure your recovery is going smoothly.

There are near-endless possibilities with breast asymmetry correction, and the outcome of your procedure will largely depend on what goals you wish to achieve. No matter what size and shape of breasts you are going for, our team can help you reach your goals and ensure that your breasts are as symmetrical as possible.

After a breast correction surgery, you may feel more comfortable in form-fitting or revealing clothing, and we encourage you to try new things and wear whatever interests you. Our team loves to see the improved body confidence that often comes with this procedure and to watch our patients flourish after surgery.

Although your breasts will likely change gradually with age, breast surgery results are typically long-lasting as long as you maintain a stable weight. If you get breast implants, your implants may sit at a higher position at first. Your implants should soften and settle into place in the months following your surgery. Breast implants should last around a decade or longer, but you must eventually replace them.

Good candidates for breast surgery are healthy without serious medical conditions. Additionally, patients should be at a stable weight and should not be pregnant or nursing. To undergo surgery, you must also be an adult with fully developed breasts.

If you want more even, symmetrical breasts, breast asymmetry surgery may be right for you. To determine if you are a candidate, schedule a consultation with one of our highly experienced surgeons at the Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery. They will examine your areas of concern and determine if you are a good fit for breast surgery.

Since there are multiple procedure options to correct asymmetrical breasts, the cost varies depending on your unique treatment in addition to factors such as your geographic location and provider’s experience. The national average breast reduction price is $5,913, while a breast lift averages $5,012, and breast augmentation is $4,516These are only rough estimates, and we encourage you to consult with your Newport Beach surgeon for a more accurate cost description.

It is also important to note that these prices do not include expenses such as anesthesia and facility fees. There may be additional cost considerations with certain procedures, such as the price of implants or if liposuction is added to your treatment plan. During your consultation, we will discuss your goals to develop a tailored plan to meet your needs and provide a detailed quote so that you know what to expect.
