Life-Changing Results

Breast Reduction

Living with large breasts can cause a significant amount of physical discomfort, including back and shoulder pain. For some women, large breasts can also be a source of emotional and mental distress. With breast reduction, patients can find relief and enjoy a more comfortable, active lifestyle.

What is Breast Reduction?

A breast reduction or reduction mammaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces large breast size. Breast reduction surgery is often considered a 2-in-1 procedure, as it may also lift and sculpt the breasts.

At Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery, we strive to provide our breast reduction patients with the best experience possible. Our board-certified plastic surgeons are experts in breast procedures and renowned for their breast reduction results. We’ve helped thousands of patients enjoy smaller, perkier, more comfortable breasts.

Breast reduction surgery has one of the highest patient satisfaction rates among all plastic surgeries. During your consultation, your surgeon will inform you of all risks that come with breast reduction surgery and be honest about the pros and cons of this treatment option.

Some women may have difficulty breastfeeding after breast reduction surgery. As a result, you may wish to undergo breast reduction surgery once you are done breastfeeding. Tell your surgeon if you are planning to become pregnant to help ensure we create the right treatment plan for you.

At Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery, our surgeons are board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons and are experts in breast reduction procedures. By working with our friendly and experienced team, we can help you choose the right techniques for your concerns and goals. Additionally, our financing partners can help make breast reduction affordable to ensure that every patient has the opportunity to feel comfortable with their breasts.

Learn More About Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery may take two to five hours or longer, depending on your specific needs and the techniques used. As each patient has unique concerns and goals, breast reduction surgery can include a variety of methods to achieve desired results. Breast reduction techniques may include lifting and sculpting the breasts, repositioning the nipples, and reducing the areola size.

At Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery in Newport Beach, we typically perform reduction mammaplasty under general anesthesia for your comfort. Our plastic surgeons often make incisions around the areola, down the breast, and under the breast crease. The placement of your incisions will depend on the amount of tissue your doctor will remove and your goals for your breasts.

After making incisions, your surgeon may use liposuction techniques to reduce pockets of fat in the area. After reducing the size of your breasts, your surgeon will use breast lift techniques to address stretched tissue and sagging skin. They may also reposition your nipples to fit with your newly shaped breasts. All of this will be discussed in-depth during your consultation so your surgeon understands your personal desires and you know what to expect prior to surgery.

Your incisions may leave visible scarring. However, these scars will fade over time, and the benefits of breast reduction surgery often far outweigh any scarring concerns. Additionally, we offer a wide range of scar therapy treatments, including topical creams and laser treatments, which can help during and after the healing process.

Most patients need around four to six weeks to recover after breast reduction surgery. After a reduction mammaplasty, you must wear a surgical bra or sports bra for several weeks to help heal and support your new shape. Some patients may need a drain under the skin to help during healing as well.

Many patients can resume work and light activity after about a week. During this time, you can expect some swelling and general discomfort. You can manage these symptoms with pain medication, an ice pack, or other methods recommended by your surgeon.

You should avoid movements requiring the use of chest muscles and sleeping on your stomach during the healing process. After about two weeks, you may be able to gradually resume exercise. As every case is different, it’s important to closely follow the directions provided by your surgeon.

Breast reduction surgery patients will likely experience some numbness around the nipples after their procedure. Typically, most sensation returns within two months. Feel free to ask any questions during your consultation if you are concerned about a potential impact on your nipple sensation.

Our caring and knowledgeable team at Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery will provide you with detailed post-op instructions to ensure that you are prepared for recovery, follow-up appointments, and what to expect as your body heals. In the days and weeks following surgery, our team will closely monitor your progress and help you achieve the best results.

Many patients notice a difference in their breasts right after their breast reduction surgery. However, it may take several weeks to see the final results as the swelling subsides. Once the swelling fades, you can enjoy your newly sized breasts along with back, shoulder, and neck pain relief.

Patients also typically report feeling more confident with their figures. They may feel more comfortable during physical activity and may be able to wear clothes that they would have never dreamed of wearing before the procedure.

The results of breast reduction are long-lasting and will naturally age with the rest of your body. You can best maintain your reduction mammaplasty results by keeping a stable weight through consistent diet and exercise.

While we permanently remove excess fat during breast reduction surgery, excessive weight gain may lead to new fat deposits within the breasts. Weight loss can also affect your breast reduction results. Therefore, we often recommend that patients who would like to lose weight do so before undergoing breast reduction surgery. It is also important to note that pregnancy may also affect results.

Healthy patients of nearly any age can benefit from breast reduction if their large breasts bother them. However, we recommend that younger patients wait until their breasts are fully developed before breast reduction surgery. You may be a good candidate for reduction mammaplasty if you have the following concerns:

  • Back, neck, and shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts
  • Headaches
  • Poor posture due to the weight of your breasts on the chest
  • Indentations in your shoulders and back from bra straps
  • Irritation under your breasts
  • Discomfort during physical activity
  • Difficulty finding bras and clothes that fit right
  • Self-consciousness about your breast size

In addition to improving the above concerns, a breast reduction may also benefit you if you experience breast enlargement after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ideal candidates for breast reduction surgery should have realistic expectations about the results. We aim to set you up for long-term success and properly set expectations during your consultation.

The cost of breast reduction will vary depending on factors such as your geographic location and your provider’s experience. The average price of a breast reduction procedure in the United States is $10,000However, this does not include the cost of anesthesia and facility fees or other related expenses, such as prescription medications.

Your total cost will also depend on how extensive your procedure is. Since this is only a rough estimate based on the national average, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with one of our Newport Beach surgeons for an accurate quote.
