What is Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)?

Otoplasty, or ear pinning, works by reshaping and resizing the ears or “pinning” back ears that stick out. Our renowned surgeons at the Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery can also perform ear surgery to improve the results of a previous otoplasty procedure.

What are the Benefits of Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)?

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, helps people improve the look and function of their ears. Whether it’s for cosmetic or functional reasons, otoplasty can greatly enhance confidence and well-being.

Enhanced Aesthetic Appearance

One of the main benefits of ear surgery is an improved appearance. For those with protruding ears or overly large ears, otoplasty can bring the ears closer to the head or resize them. The procedure creates a more balanced look with other facial features by reshaping the ear cartilage.

Correction of Ear Deformities

Otoplasty is also effective for fixing ear deformities that may have been present since birth or developed over time. Issues such as misshapen ears, excess cartilage, or outer ear problems can be addressed.

Functional Improvements

While ear surgery is often done for cosmetic reasons, it can also improve function. Some people experience better ear function after their surgery, especially if the shape or size of the ears has caused issues like recurring ear infections.

Long-Lasting Results

The results from otoplasty are generally long-lasting and, in most cases, permanent. With a one-time procedure, you can achieve results that last for years. The ears retain their new shape, helping patients enjoy the benefits of ear reshaping well into the future.

What Will My Scars From Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) Look Like?

When done by an experienced plastic surgeon, otoplasty leaves minimal, often hidden scars. Surgeons usually make small incisions behind the ears, where they are less noticeable. If incisions are required on the front, they are carefully placed in the natural folds to avoid visible scarring.

What Are the Risks of Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)?

Like any plastic surgery, ear surgery (otoplasty) carries some risks. While it is generally safe, patients may experience some side effects, such as swelling, a minor infection, or scarring. Discussing these risks with a board-certified plastic surgeon during consultation is essential to ensure a clear understanding.

Considerations Before Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Ear surgery can be life-changing, but it’s important to prepare thoughtfully. Patients should consider various factors, from selecting a skilled surgeon to understanding the potential risks and setting realistic goals.

Consultation with a Qualified Surgeon

The first step is to meet with a qualified surgeon, ideally a board-certified plastic surgeon with experience with ear reshaping. During the consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your ears and discuss the best approach to meeting your goals.

Realistic Expectations

While otoplasty can produce excellent results, realistic expectations are essential. It’s important to understand what ear surgery can and cannot do. Your surgeon will guide you through what to expect, helping you make informed decisions about your procedure.

Potential Risks

There are risks associated with general anesthesia and local anesthesia, as well as specific risks tied to ear surgery, such as scarring, infection, or, in rare cases, changes in ear shape. While risks are minimized with an experienced surgeon, being aware of them helps ensure you are fully prepared.

Age Factors

Otoplasty is suitable for patients as young as five. If prominent ears are a concern for young children, surgery at an early age can help avoid social discomfort. Adults can also benefit from ear surgery; the procedure has no upper age limit.

Learn More About Ear Surgery

Our experienced surgeons offer several different techniques for otoplasty procedures. During your consultation at the Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery, your surgeon will discuss the available techniques and recommend which will best meet your specific concerns and goals. Depending on your surgical plan, otoplasty can be performed under general or local anesthesia.

Ears that protrude too far from the head can be addressed by reshaping the cartilage. The ears are brought closer to the sides of the head, which is why the procedure is often called “ear pinning.” For this technique, the incisions are placed behind the ears, where they are completely hidden. Ears that are misshapen or large may require external incisions to reshape and resize the cartilage. However, these will be carefully placed in the natural folds and contours of the ears, where they will be unnoticeable.

Recovery after otoplasty is typically short. After your procedure, your surgeon will place bandages over your ears, which will help protect your ears and keep them in place as you heal.

Once your surgeon instructs you to remove your bandages, you must wear an elastic headband or stocking cap to sleep for around three weeks. As you recover, avoid touching your ears and sleep in a position that won’t put any pressure on them.

Some initial discomfort can be expected during this time, but it is easily manageable with pain medication. While regular activities and work can be resumed quickly, contact sports should be avoided for at least six weeks.

The results of ear surgery can be life-changing, helping to reshape and resize the ears or address ears that stick out. Most patients can enjoy their initial results after just a few days and report feeling more confident. You can expect swelling to dissipate completely in three to six months, at which point you will see your final results. The results of otoplasty are permanent, and any scarring will continue to fade with time.

Healthy patients of almost any age who want to improve the appearance of their ears may benefit from an otoplasty. The best candidates have realistic expectations about the procedure and may want to address the following concerns:

  • Protruding ears that stick out far from the head
  • Ears that are very large
  • Abnormally shaped ears
  • Ears that are not in balance with the rest of the facial features
  • Elongated, stretched, or torn earlobes

Our expert surgeons can perform ear surgery on children as young as five if abnormally shaped ears are expected to cause a future issue. Patients can benefit from the procedure later in life as well.

The national average cost of ear surgery is $3,736. However, the cost depends on various factors, such as your geographic location and your provider’s experience. This rough estimate also does not include facility fees, the cost of anesthesia, and other associated expenses.

Your total cost will depend on your unique procedure and its complexity. We encourage you to schedule a consultation with an experienced surgeon at Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery. Your surgeon will work with you to develop a treatment plan, so you’ll know exactly what to expect.
