What is Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)?

Otoplasty, or ear pinning, works by reshaping and resizing the ears or “pinning” back ears that stick out. Our renowned surgeons at Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery can also perform ear surgery to improve the results of a previous otoplasty procedure, as some patients are unsatisfied with their initial results.

Our experienced surgeons offer several different techniques for otoplasty procedures. During your consultation at Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery, your surgeon will discuss the available techniques and recommend which will best meet your specific concerns and goals. Depending on your surgical plan, otoplasty can be performed under general or local anesthesia.

Ears that protrude too far from the head can be addressed by reshaping the cartilage. The ears are brought closer to the sides of the head, which is why the procedure is often called “ear pinning.” For this technique, the incisions are placed behind the ears, where they are completely hidden. Ears that are misshapen or large may require external incisions to reshape and resize the cartilage. However, these will be carefully placed in the natural folds and contours of the ears, where they will be unnoticeable. 

This outpatient procedure can take approximately one to three hours to complete, depending on the extent of your concerns. 

Recovery after otoplasty is typically short. After your procedure, your surgeon will place bandages over your ears, which will help protect your ears and keep them in place as you heal.

Once your surgeon instructs you to remove your bandages, you’ll need to wear an elastic headband or stocking cap to sleep for around three weeks. As you recover, avoid touching your ears and sleep in a position that won’t put any pressure on them.

Some initial discomfort can be expected during this time but is easily manageable with the use of pain medication. While regular activities and work can be resumed quickly, contact sports should be avoided for at least six weeks.

The results of ear surgery can be life-changing, helping to reshape and resize the ears or address ears that stick out. Most patients can enjoy their initial results after just a few days and report feeling more confident. You can expect swelling to dissipate completely in three to six months, at which point you will see your final results. The results of otoplasty are permanent, and any scarring will continue to fade with time. 

Healthy patients of almost any age who want to improve the appearance of their ears may benefit from an otoplasty. The best candidates have realistic expectations about the procedure and may want to address the following concerns: 

  • Protruding ears that stick out too far from the head
  • Ears that are too large
  • Abnormally shaped ears
  • Ears that are not in balance with the rest of the facial features
  • Elongated, stretched, or torn earlobes

Our expert surgeons can perform ear surgery on children as young as five if abnormally shaped ears are expected to cause a future issue. Patients can benefit from the procedure later in life as well.
