First National BRA Day

The first Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day has been announced by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
The international event, which aims to increase awareness of breast reconstruction options following mastectomy surgery, is scheduled for October 17, 2012.
Mastectomy is often a life-saving surgery for women with breast cancer. But having survived, these women must now deal with their altered bodies. Research highlighted by the ASPS shows that 70% of women who undergo mastectomies are not aware of the reconstruction options available to them. The purpose of BRA Day will be to ensure that brave survivors of breast cancer are fully aware of their post-surgical options.
Singer and songwriter Jewel, the spokesperson for the event, will perform a charitable concert and a song written especially for breast reconstruction patients on October 29 in New Orleans.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), founded in 1931, is the largest organization of plastic surgery specialists in the world. “The mission of ASPS is to advance quality care to plastic surgery patients by encouraging high standards of training, ethics, physician practice and research in plastic surgery.”
