Acne and Food

October 13, 2012

Although it is a popular belief that consuming chocolate or greasy foods can cause breakouts, the truth is that acne and food consumption have little to do with each other. Acne occurs when hair follicle openings become blocked with oil secretions or bacteria. They typically occur on the face, neck and chest because they are the areas of the body with the largest amount of oil glands. Most doctors agree that acne stems from a combination of three factors: hormonal changes, skin friction and genetic predisposition. Studies have shown that junk food had no effect on acne, although researchers did find a link between acne and drinking milk. Specialists believe that Western diets contribute to acne because we tend to consume more refined carbohydrates than fresh fruits and vegetables. In contrast, those found in areas of the world that promote the consumption of more vegetables and lean proteins have little to no acne problems. Foods that have high levels of vitamin A increase your body’s resistance to bacteria, which in turn cleans your skin. These foods include carrots, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, kale as well as others.

Wow! Not only am I thrilled with my results, I also must say that this experience was so much easier than I thought it would be! From the virtual consultation, to the virtual appointments that I had after my surgery… they made it so easy to check in with my doctor. I don’t live in Newport, but it didn’t matter. I was still able to get the surgery that I wanted there! 10/10 would recommend!!
