What is Microdermabrasion?

September 21, 2023

Time, sun damage, and environmental exposure leave the outer layers of your skin rough and damaged. Rejuvenate your skin’s surface and achieve a vibrant glow with microdermabrasion. This facial treatment removes damaged outer layers to reveal healthy new cells. Over a series of treatments, signs of aging fade, and your skin looks brighter and smoother.

What is Microdermabrasion?

We all accumulate dull, rough layers on the surface of our skin. Microdermabrasion effectively removes these layers of damage. Our skilled provider uses a handheld applicator to buff away these outer layers and, over time, signs of aging, sun damage, and acne scarring. While skin looks healthier and more vibrant after a single treatment, the best lasting results are achieved after a series of treatments.

Microdermabrasion uses a handheld device with an abrasive tip called a dermabrader. Microneedling ranges in intensity from mild to deep. Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery uses a more intensive type of dermabrasion than the quick exfoliation you might receive elsewhere. The most common treatment areas for Microdermabrasion are the face and neck.

What Can Microdermabrasion Treat?

Our skilled providers use microdermabrasion to treat a wide range of skin issues. While this treatment excels in managing textural issues, it can also improve pigmentation and other concerns including:

  • Uneven skin texture
  • Acne or other types of scars
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Melasma
  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Age spots
  • Sun damage
  • Dullness

Discuss your skin concerns during your consultation so we can develop a treatment plan to help you achieve your goals. Microdermabrasion may be able to effectively improve many of your most frustrating skin issues.

How Much Does Microdermabrasion Cost?

Microdermabrasion varies from mild skin-brightening to intensive anti-aging results. The cost of microdermabrasion is determined by factors such as:

  • Where you live
  • The type of microdermabrasion
  • Your provider’s skill and experience with the treatment
  • The size of the treatment area
  • The number of treatments needed

More powerful dermabrasion performed by experienced providers tends to be more costly. For significant textural and anti-aging results, you will need a level of dermabrasion beyond light exfoliation.

How to Prepare for Microdermabrasion

We will provide you with pre-treatment products to prepare your skin for dermabrasion. These products will help your skin heal faster after treatment and improve your results. They will also protect against developing pigmentation issues in response to the treatment.

You should arrive on the day of your treatment with clean, product-free skin. You may have to reschedule your session if you have a skin infection, or injury in the treatment area. People who tend to develop cold sores may benefit from medication to keep these from occurring after treatment.

How Often Should I Get Microdermabrasion?

The length of time between microdermabrasion treatments varies. Mild microdermabrasion can be repeated as often as every week or two. Our dermabrasion requires a few weeks for your skin to rejuvenate between sessions. We will work with you to develop a treatment plan based on your skin’s response and the issues you wish to treat.

The number of treatments needed can vary between individuals. Some patients may only need one or two sessions. This is often the case if you’ve had microdermabrasion in the past and are seeking a maintenance treatment. Those with significant textural issues, such as scarring, may benefit from a series of treatments. Our expert team can estimate how many sessions you may need based on your skin concerns.

Is There Any Downtime After Microdermabrasion?

Your provider will explain how to care for your skin after treatment. Your skin will likely look red and swollen, and you may experience sensitivity, tingling, and tightness. While you can resume most normal activities, you may wish to avoid socializing for the first few days. Avoid swimming and strenuous exercise for at least two weeks after treatment.  Your provider can recommend products to use on your skin to avoid irritation and promote healing.

Am I a Good Candidate for Microdermabrasion?

The type of dermabrasion we offer is suitable for most people, but not everyone. Only an assessment can determine whether this treatment will work for you. Good candidates want to address textural issues such as acne scars, wrinkles, and roughness. You may not be a good dermabrasion candidate if you are at risk of developing post-treatment hyperpigmentation. People with a tendency to form abnormal scars may also not be good candidates.

I was very impressed with Pacific Center for plastic surgery. I went for a consultation with Dr. Nichter and he couldn’t of been more caring, patient or knowledgeable. I was very impressed with how much time he spent going over my medical history before even discussing any kind of surgery. I felt so comfortable that I had made a great choice in choosing a surgeon. The office staff was also extremely helpful. I really enjoyed meeting Dominique, Coco and Kara. They were all very courteous and professional. I highly recommend this office and Dr. Nichter.
