Overview: Healing Is a Partnership
At Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery, our board-certified aesthetic plastic surgeons prioritize not only beautiful surgical results, but safe, predictable, and comfortable recovery.
Healing after plastic surgery may vary, depending on the following:
- The procedure performed
- Your age and overall health
- Genetics and tissue characteristics
- Lifestyle factors (nutrition, smoking history, and activity level)
Recovery is a collaborative effort between you and your surgical team. Clear communication, proper preparation, and careful adherence to instructions are essential to achieving the best possible results.
We will schedule your first postoperative visit during your preoperative appointment (typically two weeks before surgery). At that time, you will receive detailed written and verbal instructions, and you can review your recovery plan with our team.
Post-Surgical Preparation Checklist
Preparing for recovery before surgery significantly improves comfort and outcomes.
Garments and Supplies
- Order required compression garments in advance.
- Bring the garment with you to the center if your team has instructed you to do so.
- Have ice packs, gauze, and pillows ready at home.
Proper Positioning
Certain procedures require specific positioning:
- Facial surgery: Head elevated 30–60°
- Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck): Slightly bent at the waist initially
- Prepare pillows, a recliner, or an adjustable bed in advance.
Activity & Circulation
- Walk the evening of surgery (with assistance).
- Gentle walking reduces the risk of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis or DVT).
- Avoid heavy lifting, bending, cleaning, or housework.
Support System
- Assistance will be required for the first 24 hours (minimum).
- Longer assistance may be needed for major procedures.
- Arrange help for children, as lifting restrictions may apply.
- Do not drive while taking narcotic or sedating medications.
Hydration and Nutrition
- Drink fluids with electrolytes (not just plain water).
- Consume adequate protein.
- Avoid excessive sodium to minimize swelling.
- We may recommend targeted healing supplements.
Incision Care and Skin Protection
- Avoid direct sunlight on incisions.
- Use silicone tape, scar creams, and sunscreen as directed.
- No nicotine, smoking, or vaping during this period.

Understanding the Recovery Period
Recovery times vary by procedure:
Examples:
⏳ Public-ready appearance: approximately 10–14 days
Examples:
⏳ Full unrestricted activity: typically 4–6 weeks
What Is Normal After Surgery?
Understanding typical healing signs helps reduce anxiety.
Swelling (Edema)
Swelling occurs with every surgical procedure.
Levels of Swelling:
- None / minimal (scar revision)
- Mild (resolves in 3 days)
- Moderate (7–10 days; rhinoplasty)
- Significant (2+ weeks; liposuction)
Management:
- Ice 15–20 minutes per hour (early phase)
- Compression garments (binder, chin strap)
- Head elevation (facial surgery)
Bruising (Ecchymosis)
Bruising ranges in color:
Purple → Red-purple → Green → Yellow → Normal skin tone
Typical Ranges:
- Minimal (gone in <1 week)
- Moderate (1–2 weeks; facelift, rhinoplasty)
- Significant (2+ weeks; liposuction)
Bruising can even occur from:
- Local anesthetic injections
- Botox®
- Fillers
- Fat transfer
Avoid blood-thinning supplements unless cleared by your medical team to use them.
Redness (Hyperemia)
Normal causes:
- Surgical inflammation
- Histamine release
- Dressing irritation
Call if redness:
- Worsens after initial improvement.
- Is associated with increasing pain, warmth, or drainage.
Pain and Comfort Management
We prioritize non-narcotic comfort whenever possible.
We are a few of the board-certified plastic surgeons who offer local, wide-awake surgery. Many procedures are performed at:
Bayview Surgery Center
Options include:
- Local anesthesia
- Wide-awake anesthesia
- Nitrous oxide
- IV sedation
- General anesthesia (for complex procedures)
We frequently use long-acting local anesthetics (Exparel®) that provide up to 72 hours of pain control.
Most patients transition quickly to:
- Ibuprofen
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol®)
We prefer to minimize the use of narcotics whenever appropriate.
Time for Recuperation
Return to normal activity depends on:
- Your specific surgery
- Your profession (desk job vs. physical work)
- Your lifestyle and exercise routine
- How your body heals during the first 2 weeks
Your surgeon will clear you based on an individual assessment.
