What are Facelift and Litelift®?

A facelift is a surgical procedure that can take years off of your appearance by addressing midface volume loss, jowls, sagging, wrinkles, and folds. As skin loses elasticity, it begins to droop. A facelift, known medically as rhytidectomy, can lift, smooth, and tighten facial tissues.

Facelift techniques continue to advance, with Dr. Nichter and Dr. Horowitz leading some of the best new procedures like the LiteLift®. This technique provides a less invasive and faster recovery alternative to the traditional facelift. We modified the traditional lift by listening to the desires of our patients. That means there are more options than ever when it comes to rejuvenating your appearance, allowing you to choose the right procedure for your unique concerns and goals.

LiteLift® not only repositions and smooths your skin, but it also lifts the underlying layer of strong facial supporting tissue that covers and surrounds the deeper structures of the face and neck. These tissues include fat pads and muscles, as well as the entire cheek, lower jawline and upper neck areas. This technique produces more natural-looking and longer-lasting results than “skin only” facelifts.

With less invasive techniques and minimal scars, about 40% less than a traditional facelift, LiteLift® offers a faster recovery than traditional techniques. Other complementary procedures are often performed at the same time as requested such as eyelid, temple, and/or neck lifts.

Our board-certified plastic surgeons now consider LiteLift® to be the “gold standard” in facelift techniques. LiteLift® may be combined with other procedures like a neck lift, brow lift, or nonsurgical treatments like Botox and dermal fillers. Our board certified plastic surgeons can meet with you to discuss your options and develop a customized plan that’s best for you.

How Is LiteLift® Performed?

During a LiteLift®, incisions are made within the hairline and behind the ear where they can be well-concealed regardless of your hair style. The incisions are small and inconspicuous. The facial tissue is then tightened to smooth out wrinkles and sagging, and excess skin is removed.

Are You a Good Candidate for a Facelift?

You should be in good overall health. Non-smokers are preferred candidates. If you smoke, your doctor will likely instruct you to stop smoking for several weeks preceding and following your procedure.

Risks and Side Effects

All surgeries have risks, including possible infection, bleeding, poor wound healing, complications from anesthesia, and allergic reactions to medications and materials used in the procedure. Facelift surgery specifically poses slight risks of hair loss at incision sites as well as facial scarring and nerve injury. However, our board-certified surgeons and expert team will carefully review your medical history to ensure all precautions are taken to avoid any risks or complications.

Selecting a Facelift Surgeon

Remember, the training, skill, and experience of your plastic surgeon is vitally important. A successful facelift requires a surgeon who combines technical expertise with a keen eye for aesthetics. Insist on a board-certified plastic surgeon who will listen to you for your procedure.

It’s important to clearly express your realistic facelift goals and expectations. Be specific. Your surgeon should be willing and eager to show you “before and after” pictures of previous Newport Beach facelift patients.

Scheduling Your Facelift Procedure

Before scheduling your facelift surgery, you’ll need to disclose all medications and supplements you are taking. You’ll be directed to suspend your use of aspirin or any other medication that can elevate bleeding.

Your doctor may order bloodwork as part of your surgical screening process. If you and your surgeon agree that you “check all the boxes” and are a good candidate for surgery, your facelift procedure will be scheduled.

Your Facelift Procedure

A facelift can be performed at our Newport Beach surgical facility under local anesthesia with oral sedation or under IV sedation or general anesthesia at another nearby outpatient surgical facility. Our patient care team will instruct you about how many hours before surgery you must stop eating and drinking. After you check-in at the surgical facility and perform the necessary paperwork, your skin will be prepped for the procedure and you’ll be given your prescribed form of anesthesia.

Some procedures can be done using sedation and local anesthesia. In other cases, general anesthesia will be recommended. Facelift surgery generally takes two to four hours, but it may take longer if combined with other procedures.

Following your surgery, you will be taken to a recovery area where you will continue to be monitored. Once your body has cleared your anesthesia, you can go home. But you’ll need someone to drive you and we recommend having someone stay with you, such as a family member or friend for the first night as well.

Care and Recovery at Home

You may experience mild to moderate post-surgical discomfort. Your doctor will prescribe medication for this as deemed appropriate. Contact your doctor immediately if you have severe facial or neck pain or shortness of breath. Some swelling and bruising is to be expected and there could be some drainage at your incision sites.

Facelift Healing

You may need some help at home for at least a couple of days. Carefully follow your instructions for wound care, and do not touch or pick at the incision sites. Avoid using makeup until you are told otherwise. You should stay away from sports and other vigorous activities for about three weeks and stay out of the sun during that period as well. Your doctor will advise when you can resume your regular activities.

Facelift Results

You can usually start to feel presentable in a few weeks. You’ll notice amazing, youthful changes to your appearance soon enough. As the swelling continues to diminish, you can enjoy a younger appearance that is long-lasting.

The exact longevity of your results will depend on certain factors like the technique used, genetics, and your body’s natural aging process. Patients can look up to 10 years younger after their procedure, with natural-looking results that last many years to come. Taking care of your skin and living a healthy lifestyle will help maximize and prolong the benefits of your facelift.

Facelift Cost

Costs will vary according to your customized procedure. Since a facelift is a cosmetic procedure, your insurance will not cover the costs.
