How Do Chemical Peels Work?

October 1, 2023

Most people who seek treatment at BioSpa medical spa in Newport Beach have a range of skin concerns they hope to address. Chemical peels are one of our most popular and effective treatment options. These customizable treatments can address anything from dullness and enlarged pores to wrinkles and acne scars. Our range of options allows our BioSpa team to choose one that will suit your needs, fit your lifestyle, and give you the best results.

What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is typically an acidic treatment applied to the skin and left on for a specific period of time. Chemical peels can include salicylic, glycolic, trichloroacetic, and carbonic (phenol) acids. Many skin peels also contain other ingredients that address specific skin concerns.

Peels usually fall into one of three categories: light (“lunchtime”), medium, and deep. A light peel is often used to brighten and refresh the skin while treating more superficial concerns. At the other end of the scale, a deep peel can treat issues such as scars, wrinkles, and pigment concerns.

How Do Chemical Peels Work?

The acids in a chemical peel work on the epidermis, the outermost skin layer. They break the bonds between skin cells, peeling dull, damaged layers away. How deeply the peel treats depends on the type of acid and how long the peel stays on. We offer a range of medical-grade chemical peels, each with its own unique benefits.

ZO® Chemical Peels

This family of chemical peels can treat skin concerns, including fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and signs of sun damage. ZO® chemical peels are formulated to address your skin’s needs and achieve superior results. Many of the products in the ZO® Skin Health skincare line compliment this peel well. We carry the top-rated ZO® Skin Health products in Newport Beach for pre-care and after-care following your peel.

Controlled Depth Blue Peel

This extremely popular ZO® peel is known as the “Obagi Peel” and is named after skincare specialist, Dr. Obagi. We can apply this treatment almost anywhere on your body, including the legs, arms, back, hands, and more. Your BioSpa provider will determine how long to leave the peel in place, determining how strong it is and the depth of your peel.

SkinMedica® Chemical Peels

SkinMedica®, an Allergan brand, is one of the most well-known names in medical-grade skincare. Their peels excel at targeting hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, and many other issues. Your BioSpa provider will choose one that matches your needs. No downtime, “red carpet” glow peels are also available from this line.

Perfect Peel®

This popular medium-strength peel can provide significant improvements in many skin concerns. It earns its name by finding a balance, combining powerful results with minimal downtime. The Perfect Derma Peel is effective for many textural and pigmentation problems. If you’re ready to shed your dead skin in a powerful way, this may be a great option for you.

How to Prepare for a Chemical Peel

You should not have a chemical peel on damaged or irritated skin, so most preparation focuses on avoiding these issues. Limit your sun exposure and wear sunscreen before treatment. Do not use scrubs or exfoliants before your chemical peel. Your provider may tell you to stop taking some medications, especially if you have a more intensive peel.

Is There Any Downtime After a Chemical Peel?

Recovery after a chemical peel depends on the strength of the peel. A light peel usually has little to no downtime. In most cases, you will notice nothing more than mild redness before a beautiful glow emerges. Medium peels can result in a few days of redness and peeling while the skin heals. A deep peel requires an extended recovery period and is only suitable for certain people. The good news is that nearly all of our patients report that the downtime is well worth it for the results!

How Often Should I Have A Chemical Peel?

Your BioSpa provider will work with you to develop a schedule for your chemical peels. Typically, you can have a light peel as often as every few weeks. A medium peel may be recommended every few months to a year. A deep peel is often done once and not needed again for years to come. Many patients can benefit from a series of treatments (light or medium peels only) to reach their goals. Facials in between your chemical peels can help maintain a truly radiant, glowing complexion!

Am I a Good Candidate for a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels in Newport Beach are among the most customizable treatments available. As a result, almost everyone is a good candidate. Unlike many lasers, chemical peels are generally safe for all skin types and tones. Good candidates want to address their skin concerns with a treatment as individual as their needs. You should not have a chemical peel if you have an infection, injury, or active skin condition in the treatment area.

Wow! Not only am I thrilled with my results, I also must say that this experience was so much easier than I thought it would be! From the virtual consultation, to the virtual appointments that I had after my surgery… they made it so easy to check in with my doctor. I don’t live in Newport, but it didn’t matter. I was still able to get the surgery that I wanted there! 10/10 would recommend!!
