What is Microneedling?

Collagen loss is a natural part of the aging process. As your skin loses this vital structural protein, you may experience skin laxity, uneven texture, and fine lines and wrinkles. Sun damage contributes to collagen loss and causes pigmentation concerns and dark spots. Microneedling addresses these concerns and many more. It is one of the most effective ways to stimulate collagen formation and improve the skin.

How Does Microneedling Work?

During a microneedling treatment, tiny needles enter the surface of your skin to a controlled depth. This process creates small channels surrounded by unaffected skin. This controlled damage triggers a healing process that increases collagen development and brings healthy new skin cells to the surface. Each type of microneedling creates these micro-channels, but each has unique benefits.

What Types of Microneedling are Available?

Microneedling in Newport Beach can be used to achieve several different goals. We offer two forms of microneedling, each with targeted benefits to maximize your results. Both will provide the collagen-building effects, but each will have its own additional boosts.

SkinPen® Microneedling

The SkinPen® treatment in Newport Beach is a precisely targeted microneedling treatment. The SkinPen® is the first FDA-approved microneedling device, proving its safety and effectiveness. The handheld device allows your BioSpa expert to apply different depths and levels of treatment to your areas of particular concern. SkinPen® is an excellent choice for targeted or all-over microneedling. It allows your BioSpa provider to work even in delicate areas to target fine lines, skin laxity, acne scars, and much more.

Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling

Microneedling is effective alone, but adding radiofrequency (RF) energy increases your results. During radiofrequency microneedling in Newport Beach, each needle emits RF energy into the deeper layers of the skin. This energy has a powerful collagen-stimulating effect, heating the dermis to trigger rejuvenation. The depth and intensity of the RF energy are tightly controlled to protect your skin and target your unique concerns. The RF energy does not injure the skin, so this type of microneedling has no more downtime than treatments with no energy component. You may be familiar with the brand names for RF microneedling including Morpheus8, VirtueRF, Vivace, and others. These radiofrequency microneedling devices work in similar ways, but with some differences.

What Can Microneedling Treat?

Your BioSpa team may recommend microneedling for many different skin concerns. Microneedling is ideal for those with multiple skin issues who want to target them with one method. You may be a good candidate for microneedling if you wish to address:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Dullness
  • Enlarged pores
  • Acne scars
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Sun damage
  • Skin laxity

Is There Any Downtime After Microneedling?

You may notice that your skin looks flushed and feels sensitive for a few hours to a few days after your treatment. There is usually no downtime, and you can return to work and most other activities. Avoid harsh or irritating products on your skin for several days after treatment. Your BioSpa expert can recommend especially beneficial products in the few days after microneedling to help you achieve the best results.

How Many Microneedling Treatments Will I Need?

The number of microneedling treatments you need depends on the severity of your skin concerns and how you respond to treatment. Many people need at least three sessions to achieve their desired results. We will space these a few weeks apart to trigger maximum collagen production. You may notice results after one or two treatments. However, full results take three to six months to develop as your skin’s collagen levels increase.

How Long Do Microneedling Results Last?

Microneedling results are long-lasting, especially with a medical-grade skincare routine and consistent sun protection. You can expect your results to last up to a year. Many of our Newport Beach patients schedule yearly maintenance sessions to keep collagen production high and their skin looking smooth and youthful.

Am I a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is safe for all skin types and tones. Good candidates want to address skin concerns without downtime. Healthy men and women of all ages can see benefits from this treatment for conditions like acne scars and pigmentation issues. You should not have microneedling if you have an infection, active skin condition, or a tendency to form keloid scars.
