Am I a Candidate for Vaginoplasty?

September 11, 2023

Childbirth and other factors can change your vagina, leaving you with less tightness and sensation. Vaginoplasty rejuvenates your vagina to restore youthful strength and sexual enjoyment. Vaginoplasty is a transformative procedure that can powerfully affect your overall quality of life.

What is Vaginoplasty for Vaginal Rejuvenation?

A vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure to tighten and improve the strength of the vagina. When patients rate how much a procedure has improved their lives, vaginoplasty is close to the top of the list. Childbirth or the effects of aging can loosen your vaginal walls and muscles, making it more challenging for you and your partner to enjoy intimacy fully. This laxity can also affect your self-confidence. A vaginoplasty can produce dramatic effects that restore much more than enjoyable intercourse.

How Does Vaginoplasty Work?

Our board-certified plastic surgeons can perform vaginoplasty in-office under local anesthesia. Most of our patients prefer this option. It can also be performed under general anesthesia, and can even be done at the same time as a larger procedure including a Mommy Makeover, Liposuction, or Tummy Tuck. The vaginoplasty procedure itself takes about an hour. During the procedure, your surgeon carefully tightens the muscles at the opening of the vagina. They will also tighten the tissues of the internal vaginal walls. This specialized procedure should only be performed by surgeons with extensive experience in vaginal surgical procedures. Our surgeons have over 35 years of experience and have performed hundreds of these procedures and other vaginal rejuvenation procedures for our happy patients.

Am I a Candidate for Vaginoplasty?

You may be a candidate for vaginoplasty if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • Vaginal laxity
  • Loss of sensation
  • Bladder leakage
  • Difficulty using tampons
  • Self-consciousness about your vagina
  • Overall issues with intimacy

The most common reason for seeking vaginoplasty is a loss of strength and sensation. The procedure can restore your confidence and let you and your partner enjoy a return to satisfying intimacy.

You might not be a candidate for vaginoplasty if you have medical conditions that could affect your safety or recovery. Before considering this procedure, you should also allow your vagina to heal fully after childbirth. Keep in mind that if you have another vaginal childbirth, it may affect the results of your vaginoplasty.

What Does a Vaginoplasty Fix?

A vaginoplasty addresses the internal aspects of the vagina that affect function and enjoyment. However, childbirth and aging can also affect the aesthetics of your vaginal area. A vaginoplasty can be combined with other vaginal rejuvenation procedures such as a labiaplasty to restore the outer appearance of the area. This procedure removes excess skin to reduce the labia and achieve more symmetry. Your surgeon can perform labiaplasty at the same time as your vaginoplasty so you only need one recovery period.

What is Recovery Like After Vaginoplasty?

Most patients experience fairly mild discomfort for the first few days after the procedure. We recommend allowing at least one week to let your body heal. You will start to notice improved vaginal tightness as you heal. However, it is typically advised to wait six weeks before engaging in intercourse or tampon use. Most patients will achieve the full benefits of their procedure within this time, and many are eager for their six weeks to be over so they can enjoy their restored tightness.

Is There a Non-Surgical Option for Vaginal Rejuvenation?

Not everyone wants or needs surgery to achieve vaginal improvements. Viveve® for vaginal rejuvenation triggers collagen production to increase tightness. This treatment does not provide the same results as surgery. However, many women experience significant improvements in tightness, enjoyment, and satisfaction. You may also experience improved lubrication and less bladder leakage. Other non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation procedures include the Bi-O! Shot™, which is a safe injectable treatment to help women experiencing vaginal dryness, sexual dysfunction, or urinary incontinence. At your private consultation (either in-person or virtual) we can discuss the different options and help determine what may be best for you.

How Much Does Vaginoplasty Cost?

The cost of any plastic surgery procedure varies widely depending on several factors, including:

  • Where you live
  • Your surgeon’s skill and experience in vaginoplasty
  • The type of procedure performed
  • Whether you have other procedures such as labiaplasty

We recommend a consultation with our board-certified specialists to determine how much your vaginoplasty may cost. Available estimates often do not include factors like anesthetic, surgical fees, and other expenses. During your consultation, we will discuss your anticipated costs and financing options. Affordable monthly payments are available if desired. Our goal is to help you achieve better intimacy and quality of life in a way you can afford.
