Our expert plastic surgeons perform breast augmentation with general anesthesia for your comfort. Your surgeon will carefully place your incisions to minimize scarring based on your personal treatment plan and the type of implant used.

Breast augmentation can be performed with a breast lift or nipple correction for optimal improvements. The surgery is also often a component of a mommy makeover, which may also include surgeries like liposuction and a tummy tuck for an all-in-one recovery. 

The surgical techniques used for your breast enhancement surgery will depend on your specific breast concerns. At Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery in Newport Beach, our plastic surgeons may discuss the following options for you to choose from:

Standard Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is often performed with incisions around the areola, in the crease under the breast, or both. These techniques offer the best access for your surgeon to place silicone, saline, or structured saline implants strategically. The incision scars will fade over time and should be mostly hidden by the more pigmented skin of the areola or within the breast crease.

The two primary methods of standard breast augmentation are periareolar and inframammary. A periareolar technique involves an incision along the outer edge of the areola, which is inconspicuous in the darker skin and texture of the areola border. An inframammary incision is made in the fold where the base of the breast meets the chest wall.

Transaxillary Breast Augmentation

During a transaxillary breast augmentation, your surgeon will use an armpit incision to minimize scarring. They can then use an endoscope to precisely place the implants without having to make incisions on the breasts. The scars will be well hidden in the natural folds under your arms.

Transumbilical Breast Augmentation

Transumbilical breast augmentation, or TUBA, uses a belly button incision to insert breast implants. This technique can only be done with saline implants. Sometimes referred to as scarless breast augmentation, the benefit of TUBA is that the incision is hidden in the belly button.

Transabdominal Breast Augmentation

If you’re having breast augmentation in combination with a tummy tuck or as part of a mommy makeover, your surgeon may use the abdominoplasty incision also to place your implants, reducing overall scarring. During a tummy tuck, an incision is made along your bikini line, which can also be used to perform transabdominal breast augmentation and avoid any scars near your breasts. Like TUBA, this technique is limited to saline implants.

Natural Fat Transfer: California Breast Lift®

Implants aren’t your only option when it comes to enhancing your breasts. Fat transfer breast augmentation is a more natural alternative to implants. This procedure removes unwanted fat from other areas of your body, like the abdomen, back, or thighs. Next, your surgeon will inject this fat into the breast mound to add subtle volume and improve the shape, symmetry, and overall breast contours. Offered exclusively at the Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery, our natural breast lift technique provides the slimming benefits of liposuction combined with beautiful breast enhancement.

On average, breast augmentation recovery takes about four to six weeks. However, everyone’s healing process is different, and your recovery time will also depend on the technique used for your breast augmentation. We recommend taking it easy for one to two weeks, and you should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for approximately six weeks while your body heals. These activities can be resumed once you are cleared by your surgeon.

During this time, you can expect some swelling, bruising, tightness, and general discomfort. You can manage these symptoms with pain relievers and wearing your compression garments as directed.

Seeing your complete breast augmentation results may take some time while the swelling subsides. It is normal for your breast implants to sit higher on your chest after surgery. However, they should gradually settle over the next few months. You may also experience breast asymmetry at first, as the breasts may heal at different rates. 

After about three months, you should begin to see the results of your procedure with improved size, shape, and symmetry. Many patients report feeling more confident in bathing suits and form-fitting or revealing clothing.  

Although breast implants aren’t permanent, they are long-lasting. We recommend that patients replace their silicone implants about 8-10 years after breast augmentation to avoid rupture.  

You may only need to replace saline implants if they start to leak. If you are concerned about leakage, remember that these implants only contain saline, which your body naturally absorbs. If your implants deflate, the difference should be visible, so you don’t need to worry about a “silent rupture” with saline implants.

Breast augmentation can be a great solution to enhance the appearance of your breasts and boost your confidence. Ideal candidates are healthy adults with realistic expectations for the procedure. Women who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding should not have breast augmentation. 

Since there are so many types of breast augmentation procedures, the cost varies greatly and is also influenced by factors like your geographic location and your provider’s experience. The national average cost of breast augmentation is $8,000-$10,000, but this does not include all associated expenses, such as anesthesia and facility fees, or the material cost of the implants.

This is only a rough estimate, and your actual cost will be based on your unique procedure and its complexity. Certain types of implants may be more expensive than others. Breast augmentation that is combined with additional procedures, such as liposuction for breast fat transfer, may also cost more. Your surgeon can tell you when you should resume normal exercises. You can also observe your body to know when it will be okay to start exercising. If you are still swollen, bruised, or have pain when you move, your body needs more time to recover.

The exact timing depends on several factors, such as your overall health, the type and size of our implants, and the condition of your incision. Generally, it takes about six weeks after breast surgery to be fit enough to do exercises. However, you should always listen to your surgeon.

There are some potential risks of side effects with every breast augmentation surgery. The most common side effects include:

  • Scar tissue that changes the shape of the breast implant. This condition is termed capsular contracture.
  • Infection
  • Breast pain
  • Changes in feeling in the nipple and breast
  • Changes in implant position
  • Leaks or tears in the implant

Some people with breast implants report symptoms that affect the whole body. These symptoms are referred to as systemic symptoms. Some of these symptoms include memory loss, tiredness, skin rash, joint pain, and trouble thinking clearly. It is important to talk with your plastic surgeon if you have breast implants or notice any of these symptoms.

Fat transfer breast augmentation is generally considered a safe and low-risk procedure. However, there are some risks associated with this procedure. For example, a fat transfer breast augmentation can cause microcalcifications. These calcium deposits look like small white spots on a mammogram. Most microcalcifications are not a sign of cancer.

However, the calcium deposits can sometimes cluster in your breast due to a type of breast cancer called ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). So, it is better to consult your healthcare provider and get tests done before performing the fat transfer breast augmentation procedure. Fat necrosis is another common complication of this procedure, and it occurs when fat cells die due to inadequate blood supply. However, symptoms of this condition can be treated.

Breast augmentations and breast lifts are two popular plastic surgeries that are often performed at the same time to give patients comprehensive breast enhancement results. To maximize the benefits of breast augmentation, we often recommend combining it with a breast lift. However, this decision depends on your individual goals and needs, which our experts will carefully assess during your consultation.
