What is a Facelift?
A facelift is a surgical facial enhancement procedure that improves visible signs of aging on the face and neck, including lax skin on the face, deepening of folds and lines between the nose and mouth, lost volume, jowls, and loose skin on the neck.
Individuals who feel that their face does not reflect their energy level and are showing signs of facial aging can often benefit from a facelift procedure. Ideal candidates will be in good health, have a positive attitude, and have realistic expectations for the outcome of their procedure. A consultation can help to determine if this procedure is right for you.
The majority of facelift techniques focus on the lower area of the face, such as the jawline, jowls, and cheeks. A facelift can also focus on the forehead and midface. Some techniques require that deeper facial tissues be repositioned, while other techniques include the removal or addition of fat with soft tissue fillers to achieve best results.
Once the appropriate incisions are made, undermining of the skin is performed, and the deeper layers of the face are lifted. Undermining separates the overlying skin of the face and neck from the muscles and tissues deep to the skin. Then, the skin will be raised from the temples, cheeks, and neck, and the underlying connective tissue will be repositioned, removing excess fat and skin. Liposuction may also be included to treat the neck and jowls.
Facelift recovery varies from person to person, but patients are generally presentable within three weeks of surgery. Bruising, swelling, and discoloration are to be expected. Scars from a facelift mature within 6-12 months from the surgery date.
