Downsizing Breast Implants – a new trend

October 13, 2015

While breast augmentation is still the number one cosmetic procedure performed in the United States, the breast implant trend appears to be slowly deflating. The number of breast implant removal procedures climbed by nearly 10 percent from 2010 to 2014, while breast augmentations fell by nearly 3 percent (data from American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS)). Last year alone roughly 24,000 women said good-bye to their breast implants. The average age of these women was between 30 – 54.

In our society celebrity trends tend to influence the trends of the general public. Years ago celebrities such as Heidi Montag, Dolly Parton, Anna Nicole Smith, Pamela Anderson, and Carmen Electra, fueled the “bigger the better” large breast augmentation trend. Women throughout Southern California were running to plastic surgeons asking for the biggest breast implants possible. Fast forward to the present, and celebs are now fueling the “less-is-more” trend. (See the most famous celebrity breast augmentations). The shift seems to be coming from the focus on living a more active, healthier, holistic life-style, which has resulted in some famous celebrities having their implants removed all together, while others have decided to down-size their implants.

Aside from the celebrity trend of downsizing breast implants, many women come to realize big breast implants are not that easy to manage. The larger the implants, the heavier and more cumbersome they are, especially silicone. Disproportionately large fake breasts can cause neck, shoulder and back problems. Large breasts can become even more problematic after menopause, as many women gain weight in their breasts due to hormonal changes. It can also be difficult to find bras, bathing suits and clothing that actually fits well and looks good with larger augmented breasts. One of the biggest complaints we hear at the Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery in Newport Beach is how difficult it is to work out. Yoga, aerobic activities, running, etc. is quite challenging for women with excessive breast implants. Women in Southern California want to look their best, but they are also usually very active, so breast augmentation which ends up hindering their ability to work out and be active, can be a real problem. There are also other issues which can occur from larger breast implants such as over-stretched tight skin, the ability to feel imperfections such as rippling or folds, increased risk of unfavorable scarring due to tension on the incisions.

Wow! Not only am I thrilled with my results, I also must say that this experience was so much easier than I thought it would be! From the virtual consultation, to the virtual appointments that I had after my surgery… they made it so easy to check in with my doctor. I don’t live in Newport, but it didn’t matter. I was still able to get the surgery that I wanted there! 10/10 would recommend!!
