Candidates for Surgery
Ear Pinning or Otoplasty candidates have ears that protrude or stick out far from the side of their head. Other candidates may have ears with an unusual or an undesirable shape. This surgery can be performed on children older than 4 years of age and adults of any age. Dr. Nichter and Dr. Horowitz have extensive experience in pediatric and adult plastic surgery of the ears and face.
Intended Result
The procedure intends to correct the ears by creating normal folds and shape with less protrusion from the side of the head. This procedure creates a more positive self-image for patients. Scars are usually hidden behind the ear so that they are hidden from sight.
Procedure Description
The operation is usually performed on an outpatient basis under sedation and local or general anesthesia.
The ears are usually bandaged with a dressing that wraps around the head in a turban-like fashion for several days.
Initial mild postoperative discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication.
The procedure is appropriate beginning at age 5 or 6 or at any time thereafter.
Any facial procedure that is desired or appropriate would enhance the result.
Post-Operative Healing
The ears usually look "normal" within several days.
Usually, a thin stocking cap or head band is worn at night for 3 weeks after the first dressing is removed to protect the ears.
Contact sports should be avoided for about 6 weeks.
